Everybody Deserves Safe, Lead-Free Water, 2022
Did you know Chicago has more toxic lead pipes than any other U.S. city? And Illinois has more than any other state. Despite these dangers, and after Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot promises to remove over 650 lines in 2021, so far only three out of nearly 400,000 have been replaced. Black and brown residents are disproportionately impacted by the state’s contaminated drinking water, being twice as likely to live in neighborhoods with lead service lines than white residents. Our communities deserve clean, safe, lead-free water now!
In collaboration with Justseeds Artists' Cooperative and the National Resources Defense Council, I created this digital illustration to bring attention to the urgent community safety issue of contaminated drinking water in Chicago. This poster and several others on climate change and environmental justice were available at EXPO CHICAGO 2022 from April 7-10, 2022. Justseeds Artists' Cooperative screenprinted free posters and activated the entrance to EXPO with an outdoor mural installation. The activation and installation took place at the entry 2 turnabout at Navy Pier, just east of the Sable Hotel entrance.
